There are severals questions rising over the adoption of standardized language for nurses and its usage in the professional communication.

A list of guidelines for nurses that is required for the evaluation of standardized nursing language has been put on the website of Duke University School of Nursing. The language must encourage communication among the nurses and facilitate intervention across health care facilities and settings. The language should also explain the nursing results through a computer-understandable coding system so that the data analysis can be carried away on a later stage.

The main purpose of having a standardized language is that it makes the communication between the nurses and other professionals easy. Some other benefits associated with the nursing language include greater visibility of nursing arbitrations, good patient care, better evaluation of nursing care results, a rise in health care standards, and evaluation of competency among nurses. when it comes to taking care of individual patients, the communication plays an important role. At times, when the patients are required to transfer or refer to another hospital, unit or facility, the language create a big concern as the documents are to be checked by the nurses. Therefore, the documents must be in a standardized language that must be understandable by all nurses. The use of the language should not depend on its popularity or relevancy, rather it should be meaningful and serve best to the understanding of the nurses. As nursing is seen as a global occupation, so it makes senses to adopt a language that would benefit the community.

There is a lot to develop one single standardized nursing language but several works have been done in this regard. The International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) (ICN, 2006) is an attempt to make a single language for nurse by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The ICPN is a terminology that maps different vocabularies, local terms, and classes.

Some other languages that were developed for the nurses include Nursing Outcome Classification (NOC) and Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC). These both are linked to other prominent nursing languages such as the Omaha system, NANDA nursing diagnoses, and Oasis of health care. NIC has also been translated in nine different foreign languages and NOC has been translated into seven foreign languages.

Some nurses are required to work outstation for a finite period of time, these nurses are also known as travel nurses. Language is a big concern for these travel nurses. By using a standardized language for nurses, we could easily connect the nurses globally and it would help them find new jobs across new regions as well. It has been also noticed that travel nurses are in high demand across the United States. A standardized nursing language will help them find better nursing jobs without impacting their work. With this, nursing can become more visible and they could convey their work in a more transparent manner.

Some health care facilities are required to showcase the competency of the nurses for the joint commission. Here, a standardized language can also be used to determine the nursing competency. The nursing interferences described in standardized nursing languages can be used in determining nurse competency. a preceptor can access the nurse competency and keep a watch on their activities, such as examining a patient. The preceptor also evaluates the nurse's skills in case of critical operations such as labor.

Apart from enhancing the health care scenario, standardized language has several connections with the nursing education, administration, and research. Nurse educators can use the standardized language to educate aspiring future nurses. They can teach students the use of Omaha system and CCC. In the usage of the standardized language, nurse educators also play an important role and help the students to study and acquire knowledge actively. This will also help in the implementation and wide adoption of the standardized nursing language.

Standardized language can help in enhanced data collection, keeping a record of the nursing care. The records can be used eventually for the interventions across various settings. Many organizations are now shifting towards electronic health records and electronic documentation. Since the nursing data can be stored in computers, these collected data can be used to facilitate better services in the nursing care. the extended use of the standardized language can help in conducting major research on standardized nursing languages. The University of Iowa has executed research on NIC and NOC using computerized databases. The main significance of NOC system is that it measures nursing results in a numerical form and offers differences in nursing practices across different regions and facilities.
