This is a traditional Irish rebel song. It was orginally a Jacobite song written during the reign of Elizabeth I. More verses were added to it by the poet Patrick Pearse during the early 20th century. It is also known as Dord na bhFiann (Call of the Fighters). This song is dedicated to Gráinne Ní Mháille (c. 1530 -c.1603), a.k.a. Gráinne Mhaol or Grace O'Malley, the famous rebel and pirate queen.
I learnt this song while studying Irish at Oideas Gael in June 2006. We practised it almost every day in class, and sometimes in the pub.
Sé do bheatha a bhean ba léanmhar
B'é ár gcreach tú bheith i ngéibheann
Do dhúiche bhreá bheith i seilibh meirleach
'S tú díolta leis na Gallaibh.
Curfá:
Óró sé do bheatha 'bhaile
Óró sé do bheatha 'bhaile
Óró sé do bheatha 'bhaile
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag tíocht thar sáile
Oglaigh armtha leí mar ghárda
Gaeil iad féin is ní Gaill ná Spáinnigh
Is cuirfid ruaig ar Ghallaibh.
Curfá:
A bhuí le Rí na bhFeart go bhfeiceann
Muna mbeam beo in a dhiaidh ach seachtain
Gráinne Mhaol is míle gaiscíoch
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh.
Curfá:
Welcome Oh woman who was so afflicted,
It was our ruin that you were in bondage,
Our fine land in the possesion of theives,
And sold to the foreigners
Chorus:
Óró! You are welcome home!
Óró! You are welcome home!
Óró! You are welcome home!
Now that summer is coming
Grainne Mhaol is coming over the sea,
Armed warriors along with her as guard,
They are Irishmen, not English or Spanish,
And they will rout the foreigners
Chorus:
May it please the God of Miracles that we may see,
Although we only live a week after it,
Grainne Mhaol and a thousand warriors,
Dispersing the foreigners
Chorus:
