Yagua is a Peba-Yaguan language spoken in the Loreto region in the northeast of Peru by about 5,700 people, and also by a few Yagua people who have migrated to the nearby Colombian town of Leticia. About a third of Yagua speakers are monolingual; the rest are bilingual in Yagua and Spanish.
Yagua is also known as Yawa, Yahua, Llagua, Yava, Yegua, and the native name is Nijyamïï Nikyejaada.
Yagua is used as the medium of instruction in primary schools in the Yagua-speaking region. It is also used to some extent in religious ceremonies.
