The Tower of Babel story in Arabic

Transliteration

  1. Wa-kāna ahlu l-arḍi jamī‘an yatakallamūna awwalan bi-lisānin wāḥidin wa-lughatin wāḥidatin.
  2. Wa-idhi irtaḥalū sharqan wajadū sahlan fī arḍi shinʻāra fa-stawṭanū hunāka.
  3. Fa-qāla baʻḍuhum li-baʻḍin: «hayyā naṣnaʻu ṭawban mashwīyan aḥsana shay’in». Fa-stabdalū l-ḥijārata biṭ-ṭawbi, waṭ-ṭīna biz-zifti.
  4. Thumma qālū: «hayyā nushayyid li-anfusinā madīnatan wa-burjan yablughu raʼsuhu s-samāʼa, fa-nukhallida lanā isman liʼallā natashattata ʻalā wajhi l-ʼarḍi kullihā».
  5. Wa-nazala r-rabbu li-yashhada l-madīnata wal-burja alladhayni sharaʻa banū l-bashari fī bināʼihimā.
  6. Fa-qāla r-rabbu: «in kānū, ka-shaʻbin wāḥidin yanṭiqūna bi-lughatin wāḥidatin, qad ʻamilū hādhā mundhu awwali l-amri, fa-lan yamtaniʻa idhan ʻalayhim ayyu shayʼin ʻazamū ʻalā fiʻlihi.
  7. Hayyā nanzil ʼilayhim wa-nubalbil lisānahum, ḥattā lā yafhama baʻḍuhum kalāma baʻḍin».
  8. Wa-hākadhā shattatahumu r-rabbu min hunāka ʻalā saṭḥi l-arḍi kullihā, fa-kaffū ʻan bināʼi l-madīnati,
  9. Li-dhālika summiyati l-madīnatu «Bābila» li-anna r-rabba balbala lisāna ahli kulli al-ʼarḍi, wa-bit-tālī shattatahum min hunāka fī arjāʼi l-ʼarḍi kullihā.
