(Shen khar venakhi)

This is a Georgian hymn to Georgia and the Virgin Mary. The text is thought to have been written by King Demetrius I (დემეტრე I) of Georgia (1093-1156). It is not known who wrote the music.

I learnt during the summer of 2012 and sang it in the Sing for Water choir in London in September of that year.

Shen khar venakhi in the Georgian alphabet

Transliteration

Translation

You are a vineyard newly blossomed.
Young, beautiful, growing in Eden,
(A fragrant poplar sapling in Paradise.)
(May God adorn you. No one is more worthy of praise.)
You yourself are the sun, shining brilliantly.
