Bugan (Pakan)

Bugan is a member of the Pakanic branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is spoken by about 2,700 in the southeast of Yunnan province in the southwest China, in particular in Guangnan (广南) and Xichou (西畴) counties in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (文山州). It is spoken by Bugan people of all ages. Some Bugan people, particularly younger adults, also speak Mandarin Chinese and/or Zhuang.

Bugan is also known as Ben'gan Yu, Bengan, Bogan, Bugeng, Hualo, Hualuo, Huazu, Pakan, Pukan, Pukeng or Puqeng. In Chinese it is known as 布甘语 (bùgānyǔ), 布干语 (bùgànyǔ), or 布赓语 (bùgēngyǔ).
