Bukiyip is a member of the Arapesh branch of the Torricelli language family. It is spoken by about 16,000 people between Yangoru and Maprik in East Sepik Province in the northwest of Papua New Guinea.
Bukiyip is also known as Bukip, Bukiyúp or Mountain Arapesh. Dialects include Chamaun, Yamil, Buki and Lohuhwim. It is closely related to other Arapesh languages, which are spoken in the same region. Bukiyip is written with the Latin alphabet, and there are several spelling systems.
