Chaura (Sanënyö)

Chaura is a member of the Nicobarese branch of the Austroasiatic language family. It is spoken by about 1,300 people on Chowra (Chaura) Island, part of the Indian union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Many people on nearby islands can also speak, or at least understand, Chaura as Chowra people often visit those islands due to the lack of resources on their own island.

In 2004 after a tsunami, the entire population of Chowra Island was evacuated to Teressa Island. In 2008 most of them returned to Chowra Island, but some remained in Teressa and contine to speak their language there. Some of the people of Teressa have started to speak Chaura rather than their native Luro language.

Chaura is also known as Chowra, Chowra Nicobarese, Sanenyo or Tutet. It was first documented in the 19th century by E.H. Man, who collected vocabulary in the language. It can be written with the Latin alphabet.
