Huambisa (Wampís)

Huambisa is a Chicham language spoken by about 8,000 people in northern Peru, mainly along the Santiago and Morona Rivers between Condorcanqui Province of the Amazonas Region and the Datem del Marañón Province in the Loreto Region.

Huambisa is also known as Huambiza, Wambiza, Jíbaro, Xívaro, Wampis, Maina or Shuar-Huampis. It is closely related to Achuar-Shiwiar, a Chicham language spoken in Peru and Ecuador.

Huambisa was given official status in the Amazonas Department in 2010, and a new alphabet for the language was approved in 2012.
