Itbayat belongs to the Batanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken on Itbayat Island in the Batanes Islands in the Philippines. In 1998 there were about 35,000 speakers of Itbayat, which is also known as Ivatan, Itbayaten Ivatan or Ivatanen.
Itbayat is used in administration, religion, commerce and the media, and in taught in primary schools. It is written with the Latin alphabet.
