Jaqaru

Jaqaru is an Aymaran language spoken in parts of Peru, specifically in Tupe and Catahuasi districts of Yauyos Province in the Deparment of Lima, and also Lima. In 2014 there were about 650 speakers of Jaqaru [source], which is also known as Jaqu or Aru. The name Jaqaru means 'human speech'.

Since 2013, Jaqaru has been taught in some schools in the are administered by the Regional Goverment of Lima. It is also considered part of the Regional Cultural Heritage of Lima [source].

Jaqaru was first written by Dr. Dimas Bautista, a native speaker of the language, in the 1940s. A standard way to write the language emerged by the 1960s. A universal alphabet for all the languages spoken in Peru was imposed by the Peruvian Ministry of Education during the 1980s. This did not fit Jaqaru well. A more suitable alphabet for Jaqaru was developed in 2007, and official adopted in 2010 [source].
