Lillooet (St’át’imcets / Lil'wat7úlmec)

Lillooet is an Interior Salishan language spoken in southwestern British Columbia in the west of Canada, along the Fraser and Lillooet rivers. In 2014 there were about 140 fluent speakers of Lillooet, and another 690 semi-fluent speakers. Few people under 40 years old speak the language.

The Upper Lillooet dialect (St’át’imcets) is spoken in Fountain, Pavilion and Lillooet, and the Lower Lillooet dialect (Lil'wat7úlmec) is spoken in Mount Currie. The two dialects are mutually intelligible, and differ mainly in vocabulary. However, they are spoken by groups who are culturally and politically distinct.

Efforts are being to revitalize the language, mainly in Mount Currie. These include language classes, and the production of a dictionary, grammar and other learning resources.
