Maung is a member of the Iwaidjan or Yiwaidjan language family. It is spoken by about 360 people in the Northern Territory of Australia, specifically on South Goulburn Island or Warruwi, part of the Goulburn Islands off the north coast of Arnhem Land. Maung is also known as Mawng Ngaralk, Gun-Marung, Gunmarung, Kunmarung, Mawng or Mawung.
Children are acquiring Maung at home, and it is also taught in some schools. A language centre was established on Warruwi / South Goulburn Island in 2014 where linguists and Maung speakers work together to study, record and document the language. They are also creating books to help people to read and write Maung there.
