Mikasuki

Mikasuki is an Eastern Muskogean language spoken in southern Florida on the Big Cypress, Immokalee, Hollywood, and Tampa Seminole reservations. In 2010 Mikasuki was spoken by about 400 members of the Miccosukee Tribe, and also by many members of the Seminole Tribe. There are some 35 monolingual speakers of Mikasuki

The language is also known as Muskogee, Miccosukee, Hitchiti, Miccosukee or Mikasuki Seminole. Mikasuki is spoken by in ceremonies, in churches, and in some schools. It can also be studied at the University of Florida.

The Miccosukee and Seminole people were originally part of the Creek Confederacy, and had to migrate to Florida in the late 18th / early 19th century due to their lands being taken over by European-Americans. During the 19th century, the Seminole were forced to move to Oklahoma after the Seminole wars. The two tribes separated during the 20th century, and the Miccosukee were officially recognised at a federal level in 1962.
