Réunion Creole is a French-based Creole spoken on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean by about 560,000 people. Most of the vocabulary comes from French, mainly from languages and dialects of north west France such as Norman and Gallo. There are also words from Malagasy, Hindi, Portuguese, Gujarati and Tamil.
Réunion Creole is the main spoken language on Réunion and is used in informal situations. In formal situations, such as in education, writing and administration, French is used.
Réunion Creole emerged during the 17th century after Réunion was occupied by French, Malagasy and Indo-Portuguese settlers.
There is no official orthography for Réunion Creole and and it is rarely written. There are, however, some translations of Asterix and Tintin books and the Little Prince in the language.
Réunion Creole became an official regional language in 2014, and is taught in primary schools, and studied in the University of Réunion.
