Secoya (Paikoka)

Secoya is a Western Tucanoan language spoken in northern Peru and northern Ecuador. In Peru it is spoken in Boca de Angusilla and Santa Marta in the Loreto region. In Ecuador it is spoken in Sucumbíos province along the Aguarico, Eno and Cuyabeno rivers. In 2007 there were about 920 in Peru, and there were 85 speakers in Ecuador in 2012.

Secoya is taught in primary schools in Ecuador, and most Secoya speakers can read and write their language.

Secoya is closely related to Siona, a Tucanoan language spoken in Colombia and Ecuador. Some linguists classify them as a single language, however the Secoya and Siona people are ethnically distinct.
