Tehuelche (Aonek’o ’á’jen)

Tehuelche is a Chonan language that was spoken in Chubut province in southern Argentina, and in neighbouring parts of Chile, by a group of nomadic people. The last native speakers died in the 1970s, according to Ethnologue. However, Wikipedia states that there were 4 speakers of Tehuelche in the year 2000. According to a documentary on Canal Encuentro (see below), there was one speaker of Tehuelche in 2017, and efforts are being made to revive the language.

The language is also known as Aoniken, Gunua-Kena, Gununa-Kena, Gününa Küne, Gününa Yajich, Inaquen or Tewelche.
