If you have invented a new alphabet or other writing system and would like me to add it to this site, first send me a sample text and a bit of information about your script. If your script looks good and really appeals to me, I may add it to Omniglot.
I will also consider adding scripts adapted for languages not normally written with them. See: Adaptations of existing alphabets. Let me know why you have adapted a particular script. For example, does it represent the sounds of the language better than the usual script? Do you speak the language in question? Have you asked anybody else who speaks the language to try you adapted script? What do they think?
The address to write to is:
My name is Simon Ager.
Here is a annotated template to show the information and images needed:
The Bingdats alphabet was invented by Pegasus Whôlpwntch for a laugh. It consists of animals and other symbols found in the dingbats part of fonts. It can be used to write English, and other languages. - provide an introduction to your script - why you invented it, what you use it for, and any other relevant details. Provide details about yourself as well, if you want.
Download an alphabet chart for Bingdats (Excel)
The alphabet chart should show the letters in their standard order, their names (if they have them), their transcription, and the sounds they represent - ideally using the IPA. You can use this alphabet chart template for this.
Note: images on Omniglot automatically resize to fit smaller screens. I try to ensure that alphabet charts and other images are readable at smaller sizes by making them no wider than 600px and usually no more than 9 or 10 letters / symbols per line on charts. About half of visits to this site are on mobiles or tablets, so this is important. The fonts I use are Doulos SIL font (14pt) for IPA transcriptions, and Arial Unicode MS (12pt) for Latin transliterations.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
(Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
The sample text can be Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights if possible, or anything else you choose.
Download a font for this script (if you have made a font and are willing to share it, please send it).
If you have a webpage / website with further information about your script, please provide a link
Please provide any notes related to your script in text format, not as part of images. Typing the notes and sending them by email is the best way to do this.
If you're unable to create images using a graphics program, you can write out your script by hand, then scan it, or use an app like CamScanner. I suggest you adapt one of the templates in this alphabet chart. Please try to write neatly, ideally on plain, unlined paper.
If I decide not to add your alphabet please don't be downhearted. I encourage you to think creatively about the shapes of letters and other symbols, the ways they fit together, the sounds they represent and the overall look of your script, as well as the way it's presented. Try varying the width of the lines to give them more interesting shapes - you could do this with a wide-nib pen if you are writing the script by hand.
Ask yourself whether you'd be happy to have your script on your wall, and maybe try this to see how it looks.
The less work I have to do to add your script on my site, the more likely I'll do so.
