Humaira Humaira

The Humaira script is a calligraphic style used to write the Jawi script (Arabic-based Malay script). It was invented by Abdul Latif Hamidin in 2022 as an alternative script for Malay language. The history of Jawi script spanned seven centuries, with the first known text from the early 14th century, but it never developed a calligraphic style of its own. The Perso-Arabic script for Persian for example, had its own unique identity in the form of Nasta'liq style. Therefore, Humaira was invented to serve as the unique identity of the Malay language, while at the same time retaining its root from the centuries-old history of the Jawi script.

The Humaira script is inspired from the Arabic Kufic script and retains the iconic Kufic geometrical forms like straight lines and circles. At the same time, some radical modifications were made to the traditional Jawi characters to form the allographs to the original graphemes.

Contrary to the traditional Jawi script that follows the Arabic system by having up to four distinct forms of letters, corresponding to an initial, medial (middle), final, or isolated position, the Humaira script only has a single letter form regardless the position of the letter in a word. The script also employs additional vowels that were not uniquely represented in the traditional Jawi script; namely (é) and (o). Despite the major modifications to the character forms, the script still retains the original Jawi spelling system, except in the use of hamza letter.
