Alur is a variety of Southern Luo spoken by about 1.4 million people in northwestern Uganda and the north east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dialects include Jokot, Jonam/Lo-Naam, Mambisa, and Wanyoro. It belongs to the Luo branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family, and is also known as Aloro, Alua, Alulu, Dho Alur, Jo Alur, Lur and Luri.
There is no official standard for writing Alur, but there are informal conventions used in written materials and on road signs.
Alur is used to some extent in radio programmes, films, and books. There is also an Alur version of the Bible.
