Awa Pit / Cuaiquer

Awa Pit is a Barbacoan language spoken mainly in Colombia, and also in Ecuador, by about 14,100 Awa-Kwaiker people. In 2008 there were about 12,000 speakers of Awa Pit in southern Colombia, mainly in Barbacoas Municipality in Nariño Department. In 2011 there were about 2,100 Awa Pit speakers in Carchi and Esmeraldas provinces in northern Ecuador. The majority of Awa-Kwaiker men speak Awa Pit and Spanish. Most Awa-Kwaiker women and children are monolingual in Awa Pit. Very few people can read and write the language.

Awa pit is also known as Awa, Awapit, Cuaiquer, Coaiquer, Quaiquer or Kwaiker. It is distantly related to Chachi and Colorado, which are both spoken in Ecuador.
