Boko is a member of the Eastern Mande group of Niger-Congo languages. It is spoken by about 150,00 people in northern Benin and in the north and west of Nigeria. Boko speakers in Nigeria can be found in the Borgu LGA of Niger State, Bagudo LGA of Kebbi State, and Baruten LGA of Kwara state. In Benin they live in the town of Segbana in Alibori Department, and in the town of Kalalé in Borgou Department.
Boko is also known as Bokko, Boo, Bussa, Vussa or Busanci, and Boko speakers call it Bokonya. It is written with the Latin script.
