Eastern Maninka belongs to the Mande branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 3.5 million people, mainly in Guinea and Mali. There are also Eastern Maninka speakers in Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone.
Eastern Maninka is also known as Kankan Maninka, Malinké, Mande, Maninga, Maninkakan, Maninkaxan or Southern Maninka.
Maninka has been written with the Arabic, N'Ko and Latin alphabets.
