Cabécar is a Chibchan language spoken mainly in the Turrialba Region of Cartago Province in central Costa Rica. There are also Cabécar speakers in Limón, Puntarenas and San José provinces. In 2011 there were about 11,100 Cabécar speakers, including 2,000 monolinguals, most of whom are women. It is the only indigenous language of Costa Rica with adult monolingual speakers.
Cabécar is also known as Chirripó, Estrella, Telire, and Ujarrás, which are also names of dialects of the language.
