Guaymí (Ngäbere)

Guaymí is a Chibchan language spoken in parts of Panama and Costa Rica by about 170,000 people. It is spoken mainly in Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé, a semi-autonomous indigenous reservation in Panama, and also in the indigenous reservations of Abrojos Montezuma, Conteburica, Coto Brus, Guaymí de Alto Laguna de Osa and Altos de San Antonio in Costa Rica.

Guaymí is also known as Movere, Chiriquí or Valiente, and its native name is Ngäbere [ŋɔˈbeɾe]. "It is closely related to, but not mutually intelligible with Buglere (Murire), a Chibchan language also spoken in Panama and Costa Rica.

Kena dekä Ngöbökwe kä käinta btä kä tementa dätebare. Akwa kä temen ne nämane ngwarbe, iko jökrä. Ñö aibe nämane neen temen abko, Ngöbö Üai nämane kwite käinta ngibiarebti. Abti Ngöbökwe niebare, Kä raba ngwen.

Translation

In the beginning God created heaven and earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The spirit of God was hovering over the water. The God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light.
