Catio is a member of the Northern Emberá branch of the Chocoan language family. It is spoken by about 15,000 people in northwestern Colombia, and by a few dozen people in southern Panama. In Colombia, Catio speakers are found along the Alto Sinú, San Jorge, San pedro and Murri rivers in the Antioquia, Chocó, and Córdoba departments.
Catio is also known as Catío Emberá, Catío, Katío, Emberá-Catío, Eyabida or Embena ('human'). It is closely related to other Emberá languages such as Northern Emberá, Chami, Emberá-Baudó and Eperara.
It is written with Latin script, however few Catio speakers are literate in their language. There are a few books in the language, including some educational materials, and a translation of parts of the Bible. These have been publishing by the Ministry of Education in Panama, and Christian missionary organizations.
