Chami is a member of the Southern Emberá group of Chocoan languages. It is spoken in Antioquia, Caldas, Chocó, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca departments of Colombia. In 2001 there were about 5,510 speakers of Chami, which is also known as Chamí Emberá, Emberá-Chamí, Embena, Embera or Epena. Chami has official status in the areas where it is spoken.
An alphabet for Chami was developed in 2013 with support of the Antioquia department.
c, f, g, h, l, q, v, x and z are only used in loanwords and names.

Chamí speech is a variation or dialect of the Embera language. Upon the arrival of the Spanish, the Embera were already distinguished between those of the upper Atrato river, which heads north and empties into the Atlantic Ocean, and those of the upper San Juan river, which heads south and empties into the Pacific Ocean.
