Kembayan (Matéq)

Kembayan is a member of the Southern Land Dayak branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 10,000-20,000 people in the Sanggau Regency in the north of West Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo in northern Indonesia.

Kembayan is also known as Mateq, Matéq, Bumatéq, Bunyamp, Bunyamp-nyamp, Bumonyamp or Mate'. The name Kembayan comes from the town of Kembayan, where some speakers of the language can be found.

Adeah satu cirito agéq. Cirito dioq ngan bua. Dioq ngan bua téq bu-konsi. Taput tunkah datn téq bu-jalat, bu-jalat, bu-jalat noput poja, poja byo. Tukuat datneh tukuat neh. Jéh monik romin, (dat a) dadek datneh téq matéq-éh.

Translation

There's another story. The story of the turtle and the bear. The turtle and the bear were friends. One day they were walking along and they came across a basket, someone's basket. So they took it. When they got home, they split it.
