Matsés

Matsés is a Panoan language spoken by about 2,200 people mainly in northwestern Brazil and northeastern Peru, and also in northern Boliva. In Brazil it is spoken in the Vale do Javari and Marajaí indigenous territories in the Amazonas Region, and in Peru it is spoken in the Loreto Region. Matsés is spoken by people of all ages, and most speakers are monolingual, although younger people are increasingly learning Spanish or Portuguese.

The name Matsés means "people" or "indigenous people". In Brazil, Matsés is known as Mayoruna, which means "river people", from Quechua mayu (river) and runa (people). It was declared an official language of Amazonas Region in Brazil in 2023.
