Misantla Totonac is a Totonacan language spoken between Xalapa to Misantla in Veracruz State in central Mexico, especially in the municipality of Yecuatla, and also in Landero y Coss, San Marcos Atexquilapan, Chiconquiaco, Jilotepec and Miahuatlan. Since the 1970s there has been a shift among the Misantla Totonac people to Spanish, and in 2010 there were just 133 speakers of Misantla Totonac. Most speakers are older adults and children are no longer acquiring the language.
The language is also known as Yecuatla Totonac or Southeastern Totonac.
The first grammar of Misantla Totonac was published by Zambrano Bonilla in the 18th century. A number of linguists have worked on documenting the language since the 1970s and another grammar was published in 1999.
The letters b, c, d, e, f, g, h, ñ, o, r, v and z are used only in names and words borrowed from other languages (mainly Spanish and English).
