Mojave (Hamakhav)

Mojave is a member of the River branch of the Yuman language family. It is spoken along the Colorado River in the Colorado River Indian Reservation in Arizona and California, and in the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation in Arizona, California and Nevada. According to the 2015 census, there are 200 speakers of Mojave, and there are about 2,000 Mojave people. The majority of Mojave speakers are elderly.

Mojave is also known as Mohave, River Yuman, Upriver Yuman or Yuman. Mojave is closely related to Maricopa and Quechan, and more distantly related to Cocopah. The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe call themselves Pipa Aha Macav (The People of the River).

Efforts are being made to document and revitalise the Mojave language and culture, including projects undertaken by the Center for Indian Education at Arizona State University.
