Moksha (мокшень кяль)

Moksha is a Mordvinic language spoken mainly in the west of the Republic of Mordovia in west of the Russia Federation. In 2010 there were about 430,000 speakers of Moksha, according to the Russian census. In some villages people speak only Moksha. Elsewhere Moksha speakers also know Russian. The majority of Moksha speakers are adults. Some children do learn the language, but only speak it with elderly relatives.

Moksha is related to Erzya (Эрзянь кель), although the two languages are not mutually intelligible. They are collectively known as Mordvin. These languages have co-official status with Russian in the Republic of Mordovia.

Written Moksha

Moksha was first written in the 18th century with a version of the Cyrillic alphabet. Extra letters were added to the alphabet between 1924-1927. In 1932 a new alphabet for Moksha based on the Latin script was officially approved, but never adopted. The spelling of Moksha was reformed in 1993. Conferences in 1928 and 1935 decreed that the literary language would be based on the northwest dialect of Moksha.
