Tokunoshima (シマユミィタ)

Tokunoshima is a Amami-Okinawan language spoken on Tokunoshima (徳之島 / トゥクヌシマ) in the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture of Japan. It is spoken by about 5,100 people, most of whom are adults. It is also taught in local schools.

Tokunoshima is known as Toku-No-Shima, シマグチ / 島口 (shimaguchi), シマユミィタ (shimayumiita) or sïmagucï. In Japanese it is known as 徳之島方言 (tokunoshima hōgen), or Tokunoshima dialect.

Tokunoshima can be written with the katakana syllabary.
