Wiyot (Soulatluk)

Wiyot is an Algic language that was spoken in Humboldt Bay in the northwest of California in the southwest of the USA, particularly between Little River and the Bear River mountains. The last native speaker, Della Prince, died in 1962. Since then, the Wiyot Tribal Government has made efforts to revive the language

Wiyot is also known as Wishosk or Soulatluk. It was first documented in the late 19th century, and the first modern grammar of the language was published by linguist Karl V. Teeter in 1964. Teeter worked with Della Prince, and created an orthography for Wiyot. The Wiyot Tribe have also created an orthography for their language.
