Aramikatavah was designed by Mina McVinnie as an alternative way to write Hebrew, as well as Aramaic and even Arabic. It was inspired by a desire to practice Hebrew by hand. It feels a bit clunky to try to write the Hebrew book script by hand, and Mina doesn't much like the look of the handwritten/cursive version of the Hebrew alphabet that is used today. She prefers the look of Syriac, but finds it a bit awkward to write by hand. So, all of the letters are heavily inspired by either imperial Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac or Phoenician.
The letter are designed to flow around one another and are able to be stacked and grouped together in certain instances. This is because there are gaps built into the shapes of certain letters that permit other, smaller letters to go into those spaces either entirely, or at least partially. Mina finds it especially fun to write by hand and use it regularly to practice writing out Hebrew sentences. It feels fairly calligraphic with the use of various flourishes.
