Finnish Cyrillic was devised by Chris Winther as an way to write Finnish with the Cyrillic alphabet. His idea for this came from thinking what if the Finns had lost the Winter War and Finland was either incorporated into the Soviet Union or became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. He based it mainly on the Ukrainian alphabet with the inclusion of "Іі", "Її" and "Єє", and "Ии" in place of "Ыы".
Some letters come from other languages:
Kaikki ihmiset syntyvät vapaina ja tasavertaisina arvoltaan ja oikeuksiltaan. Heille on annettu järki ja omatunto, ja heidän on toimittava toisiaan kohtaan veljeyden hengessä.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
Керранкін пухкеаа;
Oi maamme, Suomi, synnyinmaa,
Soi, sana kultainen!
Ei laaksoa, ei kukkulaa,
Ei vettä, rantaa rakkaampaa
Kuin kotimaa tää pohjoinen,
Maa kallis isien.
Sun kukoistukses kuorestaan
Kerrankin puhkeaa;
Viel' lempemme saa nousemaan
Sun toivos, riemus loistossaan,
Ja kerran laulus, synnyinmaa
Korkeemman kaiun saa.
Oh our land, Finland, land of our birth,
rings out the golden word!
No valley, no hill,
no water, shore more dear
than this northern homeland,
precious land of our fathers.
(repeat last four lines)
Your splendour from its shell
one day will bloom;
From our love shall rise
your hope, glorious joy,
and once your song, fatherland
higher still will echo.
