Bengkulu is a member of the South Barisan Malay group of Malayic languages. It is spoken by about 45,000 people on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, particularly around Bengkulu City and in Bengkulu Province in the southwest of Sumatra. It is also spoken in the Pesisir Barat Regency in Lampung Province in the south of Sumatra, and in Sungai Choh, a town in the state of Selangor in the southwest of Malaysia. It was originally just spoken in Bengkulu City, and spread throughout Bengkulu Province to become a lingua franca there.
Bengkulu is also known as Bengkulu Malay, and native speakers call it Baso Bengkulu ("Bengkulu language"). It is closely related to Malayic languages such as Col, Jambi Malay and Palembang Malay, and also to Minangkabau and Rejang.
Bengkulu is written with the Latin alphabet, and sometimes with the Rejang script.
