Kerinci (Basê Kincai)

Kerinci is a Malayic language spoken in Jambi Province on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, mainly in Sungai Penuh City in the Kerinci Regency, and also in the Merangin and Bungo regencies, and in West Sumatara and Java. There are also Kerinci speakers in the states of Negeri Sembilan and Selangor in Malaysia, and in Bahrain. There are about 254,000 speakers in Kerinci in Indonesia, about 25,000 in Bahrain.

Kerinci is also known as Kinci or Kincai. Native speakers call it Baso Kinci or Baso Kincai. It has seven main dialects and many more sub-dialects which differ significantly from each other. Kerinci is closely related to the Minangkabau language.

Kerinci is normally written with Latin alphabet, however it also has its own script, the Incung script, which is used mainly for decorative purposes.
