Urak Lawoi’ (อูรักลาโวยจ)

Urak Lawoi’ is a Malayic language spoken by about 5,000 on the southwest coast of Thailand. It is mainly spoken on Phuket Island in Phuket Province and on Lanta Island in Krabi Province, and also on the islands of Phi Phi and Jum in Krabi Province, and on Bulon, Lipe and Adang islands in Satun Province. It is an officially recognised minority language in the provinces where it is spoken.

Urak Lawoi’ is also known as Urak Lawoc. There is a way to write it with the Thai script developed by the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia at Mahidol University. Few Urak Lawoi’ speakers are literate in their language.
