Biete is a member of the Kuki-Chin-Naga branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken in the northeast of India mainly in the states of Assam and Meghalaya, and also Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The majority of Biete speakers live in Dima Hasao and Cachar districts of Assam, and in the districts of East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. According to the 2001 census there are 20,000 Biete speakers. Biete is also known as Biate
