Rongmei (Ruanglat / ꯔꯣꯡꯃꯩ)

Rongmei is a member of the Kuki-Chin-Naga branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken mainly in the states of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland in the northeast of India by about 350,000 Rongmei Naga people. In particular, it is spoken in the districts of Tamenglong, Noney, Imphal West and Bishnupur in western and central Manipur, and in the Cachar, Hilakandi and Karimganj districts in the south of Assam.

Other names for Rongmei include Rongmei Naga, Ruangmei, Ruanglat, Kabui and Songbu. There are three main dialects: Tamenglong, Imphal and Cachar. It is closely related to Zeme and Liangmai. There are ways to write Rongmei with the Latin alphabet, and with the Meitei script (Meitei Mayek). There is a Rongmei translation of the New Testament of the Bible (in the Latin alphabet), and it is taught in schools in Manipur and Nagaland.
