Bonggi is a member of the North Bornean branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 1,400 people on the islands of Banggai and Balambangan, which are part of the Kudat Division of the Malaysian state of Sabah and lie off the northern tip of the island of Borneo.
Bonggi is also known as Banggi, Bangay or Banggi Dusun. It is closely related to Ida’an.
Bonggi has been written with the Latin alphabet since the late 1980s. There is some written material in the language, include a dictionary and translation of the Bible.
