Kelabit (karuh Kelabit)

Kelabit is a member of the North Bornean branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 5,000 people, mainly in the Bario highlands of Sarawak in Malaysia, and also in nearby parts of the Nunukan regency in East Kalimantan province of Indonesia.

Kelabit is also known as Kalabit or Kerabit. Speakers of Kelabit call it karuh Kelabit or karuh tauh. Dialects include Pa' Umor, Pa' Dalih, Long Peluan, Long Lellang, Brung, Libbung, Lepu Potong and Tabun. Kelabit is closely related to Lun Bawang, Sa'ban and Tring, which are spoken in the same region.

Kelabit is written with the Latin alphabet using a spelling system developed in 2009. Since 2007 it has been used as a language of instruction in schools in Bario.
