Kiowa is a Tanoan language spoken by the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, mainly in the counties of Caddo, Kiowa and Comanche in the southwest of Oklahoma. About 100 people speak Kiowa, most of whom are over 45 years old, and it is classified as severely endangered. However, efforts are being made to revitalize the language, including classes for children and adults.
Kiowa is also known as Cáuijògà or Cáuijò:gyà. It is closely related to other Tanoan languages. Kiowa is written with a spelling system developed by Parker McKenzie, a native speaker, along with J.P. Harrington and other linguists.
