Taos is a member of the Northern Tiwa branch of the Tanoan language family. It is spoken in Taos Pueblo in Taos County in northern New Mexico in the USA. In 2007 there were about 800 speakers of Taos, which is also known as (Northern) Tiwa. About half the Taos population speak the language, including many children. Taos is quite closely related to Picuris, and more distantly related to Southern Tiwa.
Taos was first documented in the 1930s by George L. Trager, an American linguist from Yale University. However, the Taos people have historically preferred to keep their language to themselves, rather than providing information to outsiders, such as linguists.
