Lhao Vo (Lhaovo)

Lhao Vo is a member of the Burmish branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. It is spoken by between 100,000 people mainly in northern Myanmar, and also in the southwest of China. In Myanmar it is spoken in the east of Kachin State, particularly in and around Sawlaw and Sumprabum townships. In China it is spoken in Mangshi City and Lianghe and Longchuan counties in Dehong Dai-Jingpho Autonomous Prefecture in western Yunnan Province.

Lhao Vo is known as Maru (မရူ) in Myanmar and Langsu (浪速) in China. Dialects include Gyanno', Tho'lhang, Lakin and Lhangsu. It is closely related to Lashi and Zaiwa.

Lhao Vo is written with the Latin alphabet using a spelling system developed by Luka Lahhung Hhao Leim, a Lhao Vo scholar. It was officially approved by the Myanmar government in 1972.

Translation

The original name of the Lhao Vo people is "Lavo". "La" means "North"; "Vo" means "giant group". Therefore, the full meaning is "a huge crowd from the north".
