Menominee is an Algonquian language spoken by members of The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin in northeastern Wisconsin in the USA. There are fewer than 20 fluent speakers, most of whom are elderly, and a few more people who speak it as a second language or who have learnt some of it.
The Menominee people call themselves Mamaceqtaw, and their Algonquian-speaking neighbours call them Menomini (wild rice people). The native name of their language is Omāēqnomenew, which comes from the word for wild rice.
The Menominee Language & Culture Commission was set up by The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin to promote and revitalize the Menominee language and culture. They runs classes and cultural activities for children and adults, and have produced learning materials for the language.
