Plains Cree is a Central Algonquian language spoken by about 34,000 people, mainly in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada. There are also about 100 speakers of Plains Cree in Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana in the USA, all of whom are older adults. Younger people are shifting to English.
Plains Cree is also known as Western Cree, Cri des plains or Nehiyaw. Dialects include Plains Cree, Western York Cree and Northern Alberta Cree. It is an officially recognised language in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
There are two ways to write Plains Cree: the Latin alphabet, and Canadian Aboringinal Syllabics, although few people are literate in the language. There is some literature in Plains Cree, including a dictionary, grammar and a translation of the Bible.
The long vowels can alternatively marked with a circumflex accent (ê) or by doubling the letter (ee).
