North Slavey is variety of Slavey, a Northern Athabaskan language spoken in the District of Mackenzie in the Northwest Territories of Canada. In 2006 there were 1,235 speakers of North Slavey.
North Slavey is also known as Slavi, Dené, Mackenzian, Slave, Sahtúot’ı̨nę Yatı̨́ and ᓴᑋᕲᖌᑎᑊᐠᓀᐠ ᔭᕱ. It has three dialects: K’áshogot’ıné /ᑲᑊᗱᑯᑎᑊᓀ, Sahtúgot’ıné / ᓴᑋᕲᒼᑯᑎᑊᓀ and Shıhgot’ıne / ᗰᑋᑯᑎᑊᓀ.
North Slavely is recognized as an official language in the Northwest Territories. This means that it can be used in courts, and in the local legislature. Laws and other documents can be published in North Slavey on request. A program to revitalize Slavey was started by the Universty of Victoria in 2015. It involves bringing together fluent speakers and learners, who learn the language through immersion.
This script was developed for the K'áshogot'ine (Hare) dialect of North Slavey. It was first published in 1911.
