Saho is Lowland East Cushitic language spoken by about 180,000 people mainly in Eritrea, and also Ethiopia. In Eritrea it is spoken in the Debub / South Region, and the Northern and Southern Red Sea regions. Most Saho speakers in Ethiopia are found Irob Province of the Tigray Region in the north of the country.
Saho is also known as Saaho, and Saho speakers called it Saahot Af. It is officially recognised as a minority language in Eritrea. Dialects include the Northern, Central and Southern dialect. There are a number of ways to write Saho with the Latin, Ge'ez and Arabic scripts. It is currently written with the Latin alphabet in Eritrea, and with the Ge'ez script in Ethiopia.
